Then follows an account of the early phase of the evolution of Muslim politics in Bengal bet­ween 1905-1935. The partition of Bengal in 1905 resulting in the creation of a new Muslim majority province and its annulment in 1911 created a new political consciousness among the Muslims of Bengal. The author’s contention is that ‘at this stage Mus­lim politics in Bengal took a new turn’ as it led to the emergence of Hindu-Muslim tension in Bengal; the two communities became diametrically opposed to each other on political issues and the economic grievances of the majority community got an outlet.
