THE BRAVE SISTERS/BAHADUR BEHENEN by Alaka Shankar Children’s Book Trust, 2018, 40 pp., 16
November 2018, volume 42, No 11

There are three sisters in the story, Shibra, Hiramani and Albina and they are nicknamed Badki, Majhli and Chutki. We think that only two of them are brave as one of them ran off to their home when the bear was chasing her, but we liked the book anyway.

When we read the title of the book we felt that there would be an adventure in it. And we were right. The first sister saves a boy from drowning in the river. The second sister saves a child from burning in the fire. The third sister did not do anything brave.

We read the books in both Hindi and English and found the Hindi words a little difficult as we start learning Hindi only in Standard. IV. We found the books a little confusing as at one place the girls’ names would be used and at other places their nicknames would be used. Relating the nicknames to the girls’ real names in the story was annoying and confusing.

The pictures were not so good, but we liked them, because they were pictures of animals, and we love animals. We think that a little improvement in the story should be made—with the names, the beginning and the end.

Haleema adds: I too have 2 sisters. Reading about the three sisters I thought of me and my sisters and kept on imagining the story. I wish we could have some adventure in our lives like those sisters. They were really helpful. I felt that we should always help each other, save lives of other people and always be kind.
